I’ve spent thirty years watching technology reshape American business, and watching who got left behind every time it did. My own story started on a Wang word-processing terminal at a law firm in Connecticut, back in the early nineties. I wasn’t good at it, and I got fired. It turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me, because it set everything else in motion.
I stepped away for a while to raise my son, and by the time I came back, the ground had shifted under everyone. When I left, offices still ran on typewriters and dedicated word processors, machines that did one thing and nothing else. When I came back, those were gone, replaced by personal computers you now ran with a mouse, loaded with software no one had ever touched. And there was no Google to search it, no YouTube to walk you through it, no one to call. If you wanted to learn a new program, you taught yourself from the manual, and these were not slim little guides. They were huge, three inches thick. So that is exactly what I did. I sat down with the Microsoft Word manual and read the whole thing, front to back, and within a few weeks I was the person the whole office came to for help. Not because I had any special training, but because I was willing to sit with the new thing until I truly understood it.
That was the first time I watched a technology turn an entire way of working upside down, almost overnight, and watched who leaned in and who quietly got left behind. It would not be the last. And what is happening right now with AI is the very same story. The tools look different. The disruption is exactly the same. I have simply seen it before.
That willingness became a career. I earned my PMP certification in project management, and my ITIL certification in process improvement. I built and ran my own business, a busy salon I grew over five years into half a million dollars in business, serving more than two thousand families. And I spent years as a real estate agent and investor, right here in the Raleigh Triangle. So when I tell you I know what it feels like to run a business with your own two hands, and to lie awake wondering how you’re going to keep it all together, I’m not guessing. I have lived it.
These days, I build AI systems for enterprise clients at one of the largest data and AI companies in the country. That is exactly why I start with clarity instead of software. I’ve seen what this technology can do, and I’ve seen where it falls flat. My brother is a contractor. He is brilliant with a hammer and wants nothing to do with a computer, and honestly, he shouldn’t have to. People like him are the whole reason I do this work.
